Woman pleads guilty

Yellowknife (Nov 27/02) - A 45-year-old intoxicated woman complaining of a miscarriage attacked hospital staff with biohazardous products and threatened to kill a nurse when she did not get immediate medical attention.

Barbara Rose Seabrook, 33, pleaded guilty to mischief for disturbing the lawful operation of the Stanton Territorial Hospital emergency department July 9.

Justice of the Peace court heard the woman began yelling at hospital staff and complained that she was dying.

When she was asked to wait for the doctor she began throwing bloody tissues and urine-soaked pads while shouting obscenities at employees.

Then on July 11 Seabrook was again transported to the hospital by RCMP officers.

She then refused to leave the hospital, jumped off a stretcher, flicked light switches and ripped curtains.

She also threatened to kill a hospital staff member.

Const. John Legge indicated he was seeking a jail term for the offence, given the seriousness of throwing biohazardous products and the chance of staff contracting a disease.

Seabrook said she has been taking medication recently for anxiety attacks and has not had violent outbursts since the time of her arrest. She was handed a six-month suspended sentence for the offence and placed on probation.
