Housing Corp. zeroes in on land

Yellowknife (Nov 25/02) - The NWT Housing Corporation has zeroed in on land for new seniors housing in Hay River.

The corporation has put a 10 per cent deposit on a $180,000 piece of town-owned land south of the B&R Rowe Centre.

"We pretty well have decided on that location," says Tom Makepeace, the director for the South Slave district with the housing corporation.

However, he says, the corporation and seniors are still looking at other possible options with private developers and CMHC.

Makepeace hopes a final decision will be made by May.

The corporation has funding in place to construct 12 units on the property, but Makepeace says seniors would like to see up to 30 units constructed.

He says innovative funding is being considered and cost analysis is underway to determine if additional units are possible. It is hoped new housing for seniors will be constructed in about a year.
