The man and his common-law wife were at their camp on the Peel River Nov. 17, when an assault took place at about 7 p.m. The woman's nose was broken.
The couple then travelled into town and family friends alerted police of the woman's injuries at about 10 p.m. Police were also told the man was threatening the woman with a rifle.
Police travelled by snowmobile to the bush camp and after a short standoff, the accused surrendered to police. According to a police news release, the man was under an earlier court order to avoid contact with the victim and abstain from alcohol.
A Fort McPherson man faces five charges, which include assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats, breach of an undertaking and breach of his firearm prohibition.
He was being held until his first court appearance Nov. 22 in Inuvik territorial court.
