Yellowknife (Nov 15/02) - Long Huynh is back in jail after travelling out of the NWT when he was ordered not to.

Huynh is awaiting trial following an incident on Melville Drive May 1 where shots were fired.

He was charged with two counts of uttering death threats, assault with a weapon and mischief.

Upon his release from custody until his trial, Huynh was ordered to stay in the Northwest Territories, but was discovered to be on the wrong side of the border between Oct. 2 and Oct. 11.

He is now facing an additional charge for breaching his recognizance and will appear in territorial court Nov. 19.

'I was too drunk to drive'

A 37-year-old Yellowknife man was sent to jail for 90 days for drinking and driving.

Loren Gresl also lost his license for three years after hitting a parked car at Sissons Court and then admitting to officers he "was too drunk to drive."

Although Gresl has not had any convictions since 1991, five of the entries on his record are for driving offences.

"One would have hoped that Mr. Gresl would have learned his lesson back then," said Bruser.

Then Gresl addressed the court, stating: "I always make it a habit not to drink and drive."

"How can he stand up and say that?" asked Bruser.

Gresl then indicated he has not been drinking and driving over the past few years until the Sept. 10 offence.

Woman beats spouse with a chair

A 40-year-old woman who slapped, punched and threw a chair at her common-law husband will not spend any time in jail for now.

Because she has no criminal record, is a chronic alcoholic and pleaded guilty fairly early, Judge Brian Bruser instead sentenced her to nine months probation and 30 hours of community service work.

Under the probation order, Bruser imposed strict conditions.

She must not contact the victim, appear in court upon request and get alcohol counselling.

Bruser warned the woman she would be in jail if she did not comply with the probation order.

Youth may be tried as adult A 15-year-old male charged with sexual assault with a weapon and forcible seizure against an 11-year-old girl on Gitzel Street last month may be tried in adult court.

The youth will appear in territorial court Nov. 28 at 9:30 a.m. for a hearing in which the Crown will apply to have the case tried in adult court.

Fined for sleeping with common-law wife Randall Raymond, 42, was fined $1,000 for failing to comply with a court order and not attending court.

Raymond broke a no-contact order July 7 when he and his common-law wife were discovered sleeping in a pick-up truck in a ditch on Highway 3.

Then he failed to attend court on Oct. 10. Raymond has three months to pay the fine.
