Yellowknife (Oct 04/02) - The Salvation Army's top Canadian leader was in the city last week to check out the level of service being offered by the organization.

It was Bill Cuttrell's first visit here and he was impressed by the local operation and community support.

"I'm very pleased. I'm pleased with the community spirit here," said Cuttrell, who is commissioner of the Salvation Army for Canada and Bermuda.

"The Salvation (Army) has made some good contributions to the community in terms of services they provide and in our ministry."

The Salvation Army tries to tailor its services to fit the needs of each community it serves. In addition to offering a 32-bed shelter in Yellowknife, the organization is involved in various fund-raising projects.

Cuttrell said the organization's goals have been well-managed in Yellowknife, and there is virtually no duplication with other community services.

The commissioner had the chance to tour Yellowknife and visit with community leaders, local clergy and members of the legislative assembly.

He left Monday for a two-day trip in Iqaluit. The Salvation Army is just beginning work on their ministry there.

The Salvation Army came to Yellowknife in 1981.
