Firearms office to re-open

Iqaluit (Oct 28/02) - Several months after Nunavut's Federal Firearms Office closed, the doors are ready to swing back open sometime next month.

That's the word from Don Labelle, the manager of communications for the Northwest Region for the Canadian Firearms Centre. He added that Rankin Inlet resident Jeffrey Tulugak was hired to run the Iqaluit-based office. "When (his) training is complete, he will relocate to Iqaluit," said Labelle.

The office has been vacant since last March when the manager who was running it left. The office was scheduled to re-open in May, but according to Labelle in previous interviews with News/North, RCMP security clearance significantly delayed the process.

Once the office officially re-opens, Nunavummiut will again have access to firearms-related services in Inuktitut.

Under Bill C-68, all Canadians who own firearms are required to carry a licence and register all firearms.
