Iqaluit (Oct 21/02) - An Iqaluit elder was in Baffin Regional Hospital after being found beaten at the bottom of the stairs of the Tulugak Bar.

Iqaluit RCMP Const. Julie Rix said the man has no memory of the incident.

The assault took place Oct. 12, at about 12:40 a.m.

RCMP and an Iqaluit ambulance arrived at the scene after being called by one of the employees of the bar.

Police are not sure if he was inside the Tulugak Bar before the assault.

"He was intoxicated. He had been at the legion," said Const. Rix.

His injuries were not life-threatening. He suffered from some cuts and bruises on his faces.

Rix said RCMP have only had a few calls to the local drinking establishment in the past.

A similar but more severe incident, however, occurred last July.

A man was walking home from the legion and was beaten up outside. He later died from his injuries.

Police are asking the public for assistance in finding the perpetrator of this latest incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Iqaluit RCMP or Crimestoppers.
