Kugaaruk residents show visitors a grand time

Pelly Bay (Sep 16/02) - Relatives reunited and new relationships formed last week as Kugaaruk opened its heart and homes to Nunavut Tunngavik board members and support staff in the hamlet for three long days of meetings.

The community proved it has what it takes to be a home away from home for the visitors, providing them with entertainment, warm beds and delicious country dishes.

Finding accommodations for the 30-plus visitors wasn't easy. Out-of-town construction workers and coast guard members took up most of the eight rooms at the hamlet's only hotel.

But families welcomed visitors into their homes, and residents who were out of town gave up their homes to complete strangers.

"They cooked us seal meat, they really welcomed us," said NTI president Cathy Towtongie. She recited a speech from an elder who greeted the board members at the onset of the meeting:

"Love all of us. If you love, you don't help yourself. You help others," she said.

Deputy mayor Paul Kaludjak said NTI brought great benefits for the community. Not only did residents get to renew old acquaintances, but the economy reaped rewards as well.

"Renting the church hall, equipment, family hosts and also the people that organized the feast got some funds from NTI," he said.

Business thrived for the Koomiut Co-op and Inukshuk Inn as well, accommodating guests and feeding board members.

Kaludjak said the hospitality is just a reflection of the resident's eagerness to show visitors a great time.

"Anybody that comes into a community that's not from that community is usually welcome into their house," he said. "When they first came we told them that they are welcome to go visiting where they like. They are welcome into any household."

The residents wrapped up the visit with a feast and celebration at the hamlet office.
