Trailer park residents, town seek alternatives

Inuvik (Sep 13/02) - Residents of Husky Trailer Court met with Inuvik town council recently to discuss alternatives to moving out of the park. In June, Inuvik town council decided to cut off services at the 12-pad trailer park effective Aug. 31, 2003.

The out-of-date utilidette has been declared a disaster by the town. Because of the high costs to replace it, council voted to have the trailers moved out and a park or playground built on the site.

Mayor Peter Clarkson said the residents and council looked at several options.

"We're looking at having the area re-surveyed, so that there's trailer lots in there," he said. "The owners would then buy the lots and from the money we could put in a new utilidor."

Another option was moving the trailers and turning the area into a park.

The town is also considering selling the whole block of land to the residents as a co-operative.

"The problem is, no matter who gets the land you are going to have to bring it up to some sort of reasonable standard," Clarkson said.

The residents have formed a committee and will meet again with town planners to discuss future solutions.

"We're going to get together a committee of the residents and the town's public works committee," Clarkson said.
