Terry Fox Run goes Sunday

Yellowknife (Sep 13/02) - Yellowknifers head to the starting block Sunday for the 22nd annual Terry Fox Run. The run raises money annually for cancer research and builds on the legacy Terry Fox began with his cross-country run. He hoped to raise $1 from every Canadian.

Nationally, run organizers hope to raise $22 per Canadian, amounting to $704 million.

The Yellowknife organizers are setting a much more modest goal.

They are hoping for an average of $1.50 per resident, which would amount to a local total of $30,000.

That would build on the $21,000 raised last year, the highest so far for Yellowknife.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the Yellowknife Community Arena and the run begins at 1 p.m.

Before the run, participants will go through a jazzercise warm-up. The city's army cadet corps will have an honour guard set up.

It is hoped that everyone in town will throw their support towards that fundraiser because so many people's lives have been touched by cancer.

Organizer Rob McPhee stressed the event is not being promoted for only the athletic.

"Anyone can get involved," he said.
