Chateau Nova told to clean up act

Yellowknife (Aug 30/02) - The city may begin fining Chateau Nova $50 a day if the hotel doesn't comply with requirements on its building permit by Sept. 30.

The hotel pledged to create four landscaped islands near the entrances to its property on Franklin Ave. as part of the development permit process. Those were to have been built by Oct. 1, 2001, but still have not been installed.

Coun. Kevin O'Reilly drew attention to the matter, saying he had received complaints from several citizens.

Lands Manager Monte Christensen said the hotel has told him it will complete construction by Sept. 30. If it doesn't, the city can use a $5,000 deposit to complete the construction. Or it can fine the hotel $100 the first day and $50 for every following day that construction is not completed.

"I would encourage the developer to actually get on with it and do the work," said O'Reilly.

Calls to the hotel's owner, Mike Mrdjenovich were not returned by press time.
