Yellowknife (Aug 21/02) - The Workers' Compensation Board has completed its on-site investigation at the scene of an industrial accident in Kam Lake last week.

The condition of Jamie Stringer, 21, is still unknown. Deputy fire chief Sandy McPhee said the Stringer sustained severe head injuries and fractures at Coneco Equipment Inc. during the early afternoon hours of Aug. 15.

The WCB has confirmed the accident occurred while workers were changing a tire on a heavy piece of equipment.

Public affairs manager Dave Grundy said Monday that several items have been seized from the site for follow-up examination.

"Now they just have to send some stuff out to some agencies to look at equipment and things like that," said Grundy.

Grundy said when a tire is off a heavy piece of equipment workers are required to put it into a cage.

"However, in this case the equipment was jacked up ... so what they were doing was changing the tire on the piece of equipment when it exploded and hit the individual in the arm and the head," he said.

Stringer was medevaced to Edmonton for medical attention shortly after the accident occurred.
