Tommy Alikatuktuk, 42, was stabbed in the abdomen and above his right eye during an altercation in the early morning hours of Aug. 7.
While police were called to House 2217 in Iqaluit, the incident is alleged to have occurred at Apartment 2221.
Staff Sgt. Michael Jeffrey of the RCMP detachment said police arrested a suspect shortly after the incident.
Jeffrey also said alcohol played a role in the incident.
The 33-year-old suspect made his first appearance in court Monday afternoon, Aug. 12, to answer to one count of aggravated assault. A ban preventing the publication of details relating to the event was ordered.

In fact, Thomasie Alikatuktuk, the acting president of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association was in no way connected to the incident.
