Fort Smith (July 08/02) - A military invasion of Fort Smith has begun. However, it's a friendly invasion.

The Canadian Armed Forces is holding a pre-recruiting training course as part of its Aboriginal Entry Program.

It's the first time the course has been held in Fort Smith.

In all, 32 potential recruits will get a taste of military life during the course, which will run July 8-18.

The aboriginal candidates come from the NWT, Nunavut, Northern Ontario and Quebec.

Capt. Elisha Sloan, the course director and recruiting officer for the Northern territories, said she is pleased with the turnout.

"Thirty-two is a full course."

The course has not been held for the last two years because of a lack of interest.

Sloan said she is not sure why there is more interest this year, other than there has been very aggressive recruiting efforts towards aboriginal people.

In fact, there were more than 32 applicants for the course, but some people submitted incomplete application forms and others failed to meet minimum requirements.

Along with the students, there will be a staff of eight military personnel, along with guest lecturers.

Staff started to arrive in Fort Smith late last week.

"We'll definitely be noticed," Sloan said.

She explained the course is designed to give aboriginal Northerners a feel for military life.

"People get a chance to try it out, without making a commitment to the Canadian Armed Forces."

The students will learn such things as basic military skills, parading, military routine and command structure.

They will also get a feel for southern culture and the career opportunities available in the Armed Forces.

The participants will stay at Aurora College's Breynat Hall, and will use local facilities such as the Recreation Centre, the swimming pool and the biathlon range.

The course will conclude with a ceremony and parade July 18.

The Town of Fort Smith will also host a community barbecue July 14.
