Capital's streets get some names

Iqaluit (July 29/02) - Iqaluit's streets are no longer nameless. A naming bylaw was read for the third time in city council July 23 and finally passed.

"It was read and made official," said Cheri Kemp-Kinnear, community economic developer for the city.

The first street signs will be installed by Queen Elizabeth when she comes to Iqaluit to visit in October.

There will be a monument in place at the four corners in the downtown core where the first signs will go up. The four corners are made up of Federal Drive, Mivvik Street, Niaqunnguusiaq Road and Queen Elizabeth Way, which is presently known as Ring Road.

"I don't know that the community as a whole will ever be satisfied, but there has to be a starting point," said Kemp-Kinnear.

Council rejected one of the suggestions made at an elders meeting to change the name for the Road to Nowhere.

Elders said the road actually does go somewhere -- it goes to Crazy Lake.

At the same time, the suggestion made by elders about Apex Road was accepted. It will be called Niaqunnguusiaq Road, which is simply Road to Apex in Inuktitut.

Kemp-Kinnear said with the bylaw being passed, it is time to move forward.

"It's an ongoing project and as the city grows, there will be more streets to name," she said.

There are 76 names in total for streets across the city. Public works will be responsible for putting the signs up.
