Iqaluit (July 22/02) - An Iqaluit man was medevaced to Ottawa earlier this month after being beaten on his way home from the Royal Canadian Legion.

On July 13 at approximately 2:20 a.m., RCMP received a call about a man in need of assistance in the 300-block area of the city.

The victim was identified as David Nowdluk.

Police said the badly beaten Nowdluk was transported to Baffin Regional Hospital by ambulance and that about 12 hours later, he was medevaced to Ottawa's Civic Hospital.

Nowdluk's sister, Rosie Ellsworth, said last week she saw her brother before he was flown out.

"He couldn't respond. His face is fractured on the left side and his nose was also broken," she said.

Ellsworth said her brother is in stable condition, but has not spoken as of yet.

Iqaluit RCMP are conducting an investigation and asking anyone with relevant information to contact the local detachment or Crime Stoppers.
