Hundreds come out to launch new mall

Rankin Inlet (July 10/02) - While much of the focus was on Canada Day during the July 1 long weekend, folks in Rankin Inlet had an additional reason to come together and celebrate.

In fact, more than 800 people turned out for the grand opening of the Tittaq Mall on June 29.

The mall has been in development for about two years since its initial planning.

It is the first major development project in Rankin's downtown core in the past decade.

The mall houses Tittaq Office Products, its furniture division, a Radio Shack, a new clearance centre, and Stella's Niuvirvialaaq, a tanning salon, and clothing and accessories shop.

The mall is a joint venture between the Evaz Group and Tapiriit Ltd.

Evaz employs seven people in its mall, with five being full time, one part time and one summer student. Tittaq assistant manager Pat Reimer says it's a tremendous advantage for the company to have all its stores under the one roof.

"The biggest improvement is the communication between all our staff members, having them all now working together in the mall," says Reimer.

"When it comes right down to it, even though the old location has been open for about two years, I don't think a lot of people in town were even aware that we sold furniture."

The new clearance centre specializes in offering a wide variety of products at bargain basement prices.

Reimer says the company never knows what it's going to receive for the clearance centre from its distributor.

"That's kind of neat because the items we receive are always a surprise to us.

"We have toys, socks, spices, tools, you name it. It's really comparable to the old Biway chain, if people here are familiar with that former Southern chain."

Reimer says not only will it be easier for people to shop under one roof, but being attached to the Siniktarvik hotel provides the mall with high exposure to people visiting Rankin. She says the new location also allows for a wider variety of products.
