Seniors recognized for service

Yellowknife (June 05/02) - Outstanding senior citizens were recognized for their dedicated volunteer service at a special awards dinner Sunday.

Members of the Yellowknife Seniors Society were joined by Mayor Gord Van Tighem and Great Slave MLA Bill Braden at their 10th anniversary recognition awards dinner at the Baker Centre.

Mayor Van Tighem assisted 1st Vice President David Wind in unveiling the Presidents Roll, honouring all YKSS past-presidents for a job well done.

Past-presidents honoured were Melville Brown, Robert Spence, Julie Van Dine-Arden, Jim Wylie, Gladys Eggenberger and Jan Stirling.

The YKSS also unveiled a roll of seniors who have provided outstanding service to the community and the Yellowknife Seniors Society.

Those recognized include Barbara Bromley, Donald Hunter, Jan Stirling, Esther Braden, Gladys Eggenberger, Ed Jeske and Dusty Miller.

During her address, NWT commissioner Glenna Hansen said she was very grateful for the dedication of all volunteers and for setting an example for young people.

"I would like to say thank you not only for myself, but also on behalf of the people in the Northwest Territories to all of you who have given your time, energy, knowledge and self to improve our communities," she said.
