Yellowknife (June 05/02) - Home care got a $10,000 boost last week from the Vincent Massey Legion.

Randy Horne, president of branch No. 164, said the care his terminally ill mother received in her last days of life inspired him to support the service.

"Home care is one of the best kept secrets around town," said Horne.

The money, which was presented to home care staff May 31, was raised through the Legion's weekend bingo games, and Nevada ticket sales.

Jack Adderley, 77, a recipient of home care and a veteran of the Second World War and Korean War, lauded the service.

"I had a stroke a few years ago and the workers came in to install fixtures for bathroom safety. They were a godsend to me," said Adderley.

Heather Chetwynd, manager of community health at the Yellowknife Health and Social Services board, said the money will be used for various services, including the purchase of new wheelchairs and walkers.

Home care workers in Yellowknife provide services to about 300 clients per month including palliative care, nutrition education and meals on wheels. The program is funded by the territorial government and services are provided in the capital, Dettah and Ndilo.
