Yellowknife (May 22/02) - The NWT Department of Corrections is taking measures to ensure a Pond Inlet man convicted of sexual interference against a 12-year-old girl can no longer contact her from prison.

Although Lanny Kippomee, 22, was ordered by the court to avoid contacting the victim, he continued to write threatening letters to her from jail. The victim is now 14.

On May 7, Kippomee was sentenced to another one-year sentence for disobeying the no-contact order.

He is currently serving 22 months in the Yellowknife Correctional Centre for sexual interference, assault with a weapon and escaping police custody two years ago.

Assistant director of corrections services Doug Friesen said corrections will ensure Kippomee can no longer contact the girl.

"We have taken corrective action to ensure that this does not happen again," said Friesen.

He could not elaborate on details of the corrective action taken because of security issues.
