New rules for snowmobilers

Iqaluit (May 20/02) - A new all terrain vehicle bylaw will require Iqaluit residents, including hunters, to register and insure snowmobiles or risk getting tickets.

The bylaw, has passed first reading at city council, and will likely get approval by next winter.

The bylaw also includes a $100 fine for not wearing a helmet. And those 14 and under can only drive a machine if accompanied by someone 16 years or older.

However, these rules don't apply when snowmobilers are 500 metres from a road maintained by the City of Iqaluit.

Speeding and driving without "noise reducing equipment" will cost drivers the most -- up to $250.
