Iqaluit (May 20/02) - Inuksuk high school student Sean Doherty won a $50,000 scholarship from TD Canada Trust at a recent ceremony in Ottawa.

"I was amazed," said the Grade 12 student.

The 18-year-old will enter the bio-medical program at The University of Guelph in Ontario in September.

He has a 93 per cent average.

The news came by mail. "And then I called everyone," he said.

Doherty now "feels like he has to justify it" by volunteering.

So what's he going to become with that $50,000?

"I'm pretty sure I want to be a doctor, although I might change my mind," he said.

"I like helping people."

Canada Trust has the largest private scholarship program in Canada, awarding 20 people each year.
