Kivalliq News picks up three awards

Yellowknife (May 01/01) - Kivalliq News and News/North once again turned in strong showings at provincial newspaper competitions this past month.

Kivalliq News editor Darrell Greer captured second place for editorial writing at the Manitoba Community Newspaper Awards in Winnipeg. The editorial, "How to take the fun out of sports," focused on overtime pay going to Sport Nunavut employees, when so many parents and others volunteer their free time doing much the same thing for their local sports teams.

Kivalliq News also took home second place for best classified ad section and third place for best typography.

The Ontario Community Newspaper Association awarded News/North top honours in the general excellence category of the Better Newspaper Competition.

Judges described News/North as providing, "Comprehensive coverage of news events in a large geographical area of Canada, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut."

News/North also took top honours in the online edition competition and for the best business finance story.
