Yellowknife (Apr 03/02) - David Beckwith has been convicted of assault and the head of Centurion Security now has a criminal record.

Territorial Court Judge Brian Bruser found Beckwith guilty of assault Tuesday.

Beckwith's two-day trial took place last month. At the time, Bruser reserved decision.

Bruser fined Beckwith $1,000, plus a $150 victims of crime surcharge. He has until July to pay.

Crown Attorney Bernadette Schmaltz said she felt the judge's sentence was "within the range for the offence."

She said she left the option of jail time up to the court, "the injuries were quite severe."

Defence lawyer James Brydon said later in the day the fine was "at the high end."

The charge stems from an altercation which took place outside Raven's Court apartments last December.

On Dec. 26, Beckwith physically restrained a teenager he claimed was causing a disturbance.

According to a police press release issued Jan. 7, "the individual that was restrained suffered frostbite on one arm and some bruises."

Police laid a single charge of common assault.

Beckwith was unavailable for comment as of press time.
