Stickers to track unruly drivers

Iqaluit (Jan 21/02) - City of Iqaluit drivers, specifically water and sewage truck drivers, have a reputation for driving too fast.

But now, "How's my driving stickers?" will help the city connect unruly drivers to their driving.

Each truck is assigned an identifying number. On the stickers is a phone number so the public can complain.

Prior to this, the public didn't have a way to express their thoughts about certain drivers.

Sometimes, when people complained, it was unclear if the truck in question was even a city vehicle.

"In some cases it was hard to tell," said Iqaluit Community Economic Developer Cheri Kemp-Kinnear.

The city will direct complaints about speeding to bylaw officials.

Terry Augustus, chief bylaw officer, said the city has received a couple complaints recently.

But he can't attribute them to the stickers. And overall, in recent months, complaints about driving are down.

Ungalak Illnik hopes the signs make water-truck drivers more aware of their surroundings.

"I think it's a great idea. As drivers, sometimes we don't realize when we are bothering someone."

"I try to stay away from the bigger trucks. They drive too fast and cover you in mud. It covers your windshield and blocks your sight. They should slow down."

Still, she probably won't complain because of mud splashing. "But if something really serious happened, I would."
