Yellowknife (Jan 11/02) - This baby is already showing a good sense of timing.

Jason Nasogaluak Jr. was born at 11:01 a.m. Jan. 2 at the Inuvik Regional Hospital, thus becoming the New Year's baby for the region, and the entire NWT.

Weighing in at 3.8 kilograms, Jason Jr. is also the first son for Jason and Marlene, who have three daughters. They are Jaylene, 5, Ruby, 3, and Florence, 1.

"It's going to take some time to get used to," Marlene said. "I'm so used to my girls."

Marlene was born and raised in Inuvik but moved to Tuktoyaktuk in 1999. She was due Jan. 2 and came to Inuvik Dec. 20, where she and her family stayed with Rachel Kasook.

Marlene explained she first felt labour pains the afternoon of Jan. 1, but stayed at Kasook's home until the next morning. She got to the hospital around 9:30 a.m.

Marlene expected to be released from the hospital last Friday or Saturday. Since 2000 she has been a child care worker at the Tuk Child Development Centre.

Jason said he was hoping for a son this time around, but really didn't care so long as the baby was healthy. Jason was born in Inuvik and grew up in Sachs Harbour, before moving to Tuk in 1986. He works at the gas station there.

Both Marlene and Jason said they were surprised to have the New Year's baby. They extended a big thank you to Dr. Andrea Jenkins, who delivered the baby, as well as all the hospital staff.

"A big thank you to all our families," Marlene added.

The Nasogaluaks received gifts from local groups and firms.
