Inuvik (Nov 30/01) - A charge of assault with a weapon has been laid against a 22-year-old Inuvik resident after a male received several stab wounds.

Inuvik RCMP responded to a call around 1:25 a.m. Sunday of two males fighting at a residence on Inuit Road. Lanny Stewart was arrested at the scene, and is related to the victim.

"Some other relatives were in the house," explained Staff Sgt. Mark Wharton of the Inuvik RCMP.

"Liquor was involved, and the weapon used was a box cutter knife."

The victim was held overnight at the Inuvik Regional Hospital for observation and was released the next day.

Stewart was released before a justice of the peace with several conditions and will appear in Inuvik territorial court on Dec. 17 to answer to the charge.

In total the Inuvik RCMP responded to 33 complaints over the weekend, and lodged 16 prisoners.

Six complaints involved mischief, three pertained to causing a disturbance, two dealt with break and enter, and one involved drunk driving.

There were also a total of six complaints dealing with assault.
