Snowmobile accident causes minor injuries

Inuvik (Nov 02/01) - Two young people were slightly injured following a snowmobile accident on Ruyant Crescent shortly before noon on Sunday.

Cpl. Jeff Hildebrandt of the Inuvik RCMP explained on Monday that the driver lost control and the snowmobile flipped over.

"The passenger had injuries, which led to her being taken to the hospital by ambulance. Her injuries were determined to be minor, but she was hospitalized for observation," Hildebrandt said.

"The driver sustained minor injuries as well, but he was not admitted to hospital," he said.

"They were both underage, and we are proceeding with charges against the driver."

He said both people were wearing helmets but didn't have them strapped on properly, so their helmets came off.

The snowmobile's windshield was taken off during the accident, as was some plastic.

Hildebrandt said it was still uncertain how fast the driver was going at the time of the accident.

"There is some indication there may have been mechanical problems that led to it."
