Aeroplan changes hit North

Northern News Services

Yellowknife (Nov 19/01) - NWT travellers will soon have to spend more of their Aeroplan frequent-flyer points for "short hauls."

Air Canada announced the "small change" recently.

It reduced the number of destinations eligible for short-haul flights out of both the NWT and Nunavut. These trips cost travellers 15,000 points for an economy ticket. Other, long-haul, flights within Canada or between Canada and the continental U.S. cost 25,000 points.

Beginning Dec. 6, the short hauls will be limited to flights between western Nunavut (including Rankin Inlet, Cambridge Bay, Qurluqtuq, Taloyoak, Gjoa Haven and Kuugaarjuk) and Yellowknife. Flights between the rest of Nunavut and the NWT, as well as all flights between Nunavut and Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec are now long hauls.

NWT travellers have also lost short-haul eligibility for all southern flights, except those to Alberta, making B.C. and Iqaluit long hauls.
