For the second year in a row Peterson is in charge of the SAMS student council, which is composed of two reps and one alternate from each classroom from Grades 4-6. Peterson is assisted by teacher Alisha Mortensen.

"The kids really like it because they really like to be in charge of stuff," Peterson said. "Fun is the big thing."

Student council members are emceeing the attendance assemblies at the school, and also help plan and boost interest in special events, including Halloween activities.

Peterson explained that leading up to Halloween students made posters and came up with categories for the costume contests, and helped judge the contests as well.

As well, if SAMS has a table at the upcoming Christmas craft fair, student council will staff it. They will also staff the concession.

"They love to do the concession. I'm not sure if it's the money or the food, but that's their favourite job. They like coming to the meetings, and it's something special," Peterson said.

"We've got some really, really good kids this year, fun to work with."

She said for some, student council provides a taste of student government.

"A lot of the kids from student council tend to also do public speaking, so I really like that."
