Yellowknife (Nov 16/01) - Veteran Giant Mine worker Derek Roberts is resting comfortably after being transferred to Stanton Regional Hospital Nov. 9.

The mine worker was severely injured while "scaling" rock at the mine's 350-meter (1,100-foot) level Oct. 16.

"I'm just laying here, I'm not doing that bad," said Roberts from his hospital room on Wednesday.

Roberts suffered a broken back, leg and hand during the incident. He also lost his right thumb.

Roberts, 43, said he is anxious to return to his home, but is uncertain when doctors will discharge him from the hospital.

"I have no idea," said Roberts. "They (the doctors) have to figure out a couple things first."

In order to help Roberts' wife and four children, workers at Miramar's Con Mine have been donating a percentage of their paycheques. A donation box has also been set up at Harley's Hard Rock Saloon.
