Yellowknife (Oct 26/01) - A suspect who allegedly damaged several large packages at the post office was arrested early Thursday morning.

An employee arriving for work noticed some garbage on the floor and called the RCMP, then noticed that the suspect was still in the building.

RCMP say they have not yet determined the man's identity.

"We've got a name but we don't believe that's the name of the subject," said Cpl. Mike Brandford.

"We've checked into it and we don't believe he's being forthright, so we're investigating to determine his real identity."

The suspect was charged with breaking and entering and theft, but no court appearance has yet been scheduled. He is currently in RCMP custody. The counter at the post office remained closed until 10 a.m. on Thursday while staff cleaned up the mess.

Peggy McLean, operations officer for the downtown outlet said nothing was stolen from the packages. She said persons named on the packages will be contacted by post office staff.
