Power company layoffs

Yellowknife (Oct 01/01) - NWT Power Corporation employees were told the government directive barring the corporation's board of directors from laying off employees has been revoked.

"Possibly six or seven," said director of human resources Derek Aindrow, counting the number of employees who will lose jobs since the corporation was split last year. The separation followed the formation of the Nunavut Power Corporation.

One year ago 11 people were identified to lose their jobs.

"The government stepped in last November and said 'No we don't want you to lay anyone off at this particular point,'" said Aindrow.

The power company is required, within its collective agreement, to give three months notice of layoff. At the end of three months, starting on Oct. 1, the one year government moratorium is over.
