Yellowknife (Oct 15/01) - Nunavut Arctic College president Johnny Kusugak resigned last week after three years as president.

Kusugak vacated his post rather than relocate to Arviat. The move was a job requirement under the Department of Education's decentralization strategy.

The Rankin Inlet resident could not be reached by press time.

Education Minister Peter Kilabuk offered support and regret.

"He chose not to move because of his family and I respect his decision," Kilabuk said from Panniqtuuq.

"When such a unique man with such experience leaves, it's not easy to fill his shoes but I'm confident we will find someone just as willing and creative."

Bruce Rigby, executive director for the Nunavut Research Institute, will serve as interim president.

Six months may pass before another full time president is appointed.

When asked if such resignations over relocations were a concern, Kilabuk said no.

"I have not heard of it being a problem in the last little while," he said.

Kilabuk added that employees with families, especially young children, are known not to want to move.

Kusugak was officially offered three options earlier this year: move to Arviat, step down as president and continue working with the government of Nunavut or resign.

The resignation is not expected to affect college staff or students around Nunauvt.
