Inuvik (Sep 14/01) - Orientation day was held on Monday for students starting another year of classes at the local campus of Aurora College.

About 100 students are enroled, which campus director Miki O'Kane said is average. She said this year is shaping up to be very busy.

O'Kane noted that the college's year runs from July 1 to June 30, and that unlike past years, many students took part in programs over the summer.

Sixty-five students completed the oil rig floorhand training program, and 13 completed the service rig training, at the site prepared along Navy Road. In connection with these programs, nine students completed a truck training course.

"We didn't really have the prep time that we normally would have had getting ready for the fall," O'Kane said.

She said one thing which really helps is that many instructors from last year are returning.

For the first time in three years, the college is running the natural resources technology diploma program (year one). Evening classes will be held for the management studies program.

As well, for the first time, the college will offer base-funded adult basic education programs in 12 of the 13 communities in the Aurora Campus region.
