Yellowknife (Aug 31/01) - As a medic in the regular army, corporal Shane Proulx has seen most of the world, and now that he is based in Yellowknife, he has a chance to experience some Northern living.

Proulx was born in Toronto, and grew up in London, Ont. At the age of 19 he joined the army as a private in the air traffic control department.

One year later he was mustered in as a medic and has enjoyed that position for the past 17 years.

"Through my duties as a medic for the army, I have been all through Europe, and have been temporarily based in other places like Israel, Iraq, Egypt, and Thailand," said Proulx.

"I love to travel. That's why I joined the military in the first place, to have the opportunity to explore different countries and experience their cultures," he added.

In the last year alone Proulx has been based in California, Holland, and now Yellowknife, where he celebrated his 38th birthday a week ago today.

Proulx is currently working with the staff of the Medical Inspection Room at the Canadian Forces Northern Area Headquarters.

"I am really enjoying my time here in the city of Yellowknife. The staff that I'm working with is very personable, as are the people I've met in this town," he said.

As an army medic, Proulx provides medical support to Canadian Forces Personnel wherever he travels.

While he is enjoying his time here in Yellowknife, Proulx has a favourite place to visit out of all the places he has visited.

"If I had to pick one favourite place out of all of my travels, I would have to say Holland. The people there are the friendliest I have ever encountered, and I love the overall culture of the country," said Proulx.

After his time in Yellowknife is over Proulx will be heading back to where he is stationed, in North Bay, Ont.

"Yellowknife has lived up to all my expectations and has been a great finish to an already eventful year."
