Inuvik (Aug 31/01) - Some youth delegates complained during the 18th annual general assembly of the Gwich'in Tribal Council about a lack of things to do in their communities, and a lack of support from their leaders.

They got an answer in the form of a speech by Barry Greenland, sub-chief with the Nihtat Gwich'in Council in Inuvik. Greenland pointed out he's the youngest member of the Gwich'in Tribal Council board of directors.

"I can understand where you're coming from, I can remember saying how hard it is to get involved," Greenland said.

He recalled that he was elected president of the Midnight Sun Youth Council when he was 13.

"Even having a small position like that, it's a big challenge. And if you don't have the backing you can't do it."

Greenland said being sub-chief, and working with his colleagues on the GTC board, is challenging.

"It's a frustrating process," he said. "Many times I've wanted to give up."

Greenland expressed appreciation for other Gwich'in leaders.

"It's very important that we support not only our leadership, but we support ourselves."

He said he's received a lot of support.

"I'm not going to stop here, I'm going to continue," Greenland said.

"Young people, step up and take a chance. Get involved," he urged. "The youth of the Gwich'in nation is the future of the Gwich'in nation."
