Fort Liard (Aug 24/01) - WesternGeco is one step closer to a seismic partnership with the Acho Dene Koe Group of Companies.
Shane Parrish: Thinks industry will benefit. |
The parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) last week, pledging to work towards a formal, long-term business relationship by December.
One of their aims is to establish a business alliance to provide seismic services in the southwest NWT. The band will be granted the right to submit the first proposal within Acho Dene territory and will be provided with opportunities elsewhere, providing the price, quality and safety criteria are met.
Although the ADK has developed some proficient slashers over the past few years, they have gained little else in the seismic field.
"We're still doing entry-level work ... some people may want to do more than just the line cutting," said Shane Parrish, chief executive officer for the Acho Dene Group. "I think this (MOU) is about developing capacity."
Calgary-based WesternGeco was the first seismic company to begin work in Fort Liard when the region was opened to oil and gas exploration seven years ago. They have shown a noteworthy level of commitment over that period, Parrish said.
One of the clauses in the MOU that he suggested highlights WesternGeco's willingness to support Fort Liard is one that refers to preventing substance abuse through direct funding or in-kind support.
Another clause allows for a joint protocol for seismic practices, which will define line-cutting methods and minimize environmental impacts.
"Industry will be better informed about how the band wants to see activities conducted on the land," Parrish said.
