Rankin Inlet (Aug 13/03) - Rankin RCMP have made headway into cracking a theft ring that has been plaguing the community.

Six individuals believed responsible for almost 10 break-ins in the hamlet have been arrested.

Sgt. Grant St. Germaine said four of the individuals were caught on scene at Mani Ulujuk School and at the drug store.

The other two were apprehended following further investigation after the first set of arrests.

Names and ages of the individuals have not been released.

St. Germaine said four are youths and two are adults.

Currently a few break and enters remain unsolved and police are requesting public assistance with information pertaining to the crimes.

"There have been six or eight break-ins in the last two weeks and that amounts to more than we've had all year," said St. Germaine.

He didn't comment on the motive of the crimes, but said they were a concern.

The RCMP is reminding the public to ensure their homes and businesses are secure.

As well anyone who sees anything suspicious is encouraged to contact the RCMP.

"That much activity happening all at once is pretty significant," he said.
