Pond Inlet man charged with attempted murder

Pond Inlet (July 30/01) - A 19-year-old Pond Inlet male facing two counts of attempted murder is scheduled to return to Nunavut Court of Justice tomorrow.

The man allegedly embarked on a shooting spree in Pond Inlet at 7 a.m. July 20. The only casualty was a dog, which was killed during the rampage.

No one was injured, but gunfire damaged several buildings, a police vehicle and an all-terrain vehicle. Eight members of Iqaluit's RCMP detachment were flown to the community for backup. although the suspect was arrested before they arrived.

In a prepared statement, Pond Inlet RCMP Cpl. Grant MacDonald said the man surrendered to the police "without incident at his residence." The incident was over by the time the Iqaluit officers arrived in the North Baffin community.

Police seized two guns believed to have been used by the accused.

Before being transported to Baffin Correctional Centre on July 23, a clean-cut Reuben Sangoya sat expressionless with his lawyer in the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit. Before being led to a police vehicle in handcuffs, Sangoya asked the attending police officer where he was going.

Sangoya was remanded in custody at BCC July 23.
