Yellowknife (July 02/01) - Power bills in the Northwest Territories will be about $10 higher starting July 1, 2001.

Last week the Public Utilities Board approved the Northwest Territories Power Corporation's application for new refundable power rates.

As a result, the corporation's customers will see about a $10 increase on monthly power bills, said Judith Goucher, chief financial officer at the power company.

The corporation said it needs to recover escalating costs.

Customers who use less than 700 kWh per month will be cushioned from the increase through the Territorial Power Subsidy Program.

The corporation will be designing a new bill to explain the rate change.
