Yellowknife (July 18/01) - A territorial Supreme Court judge has adjourned his decision in the extradition case against Walter Lothar Ebke until Sept. 6.

The Federal Republic of Germany is seeking the extradition of Ebke, a long-time Yellowknife bed and breakfast co-owner, on suspicion of being a member of the Revolutionary Cells, which German authorities describe as a radical left-wing terrorist group.

Ebke is alleged to have been active in the Revolutionary Cells in Berlin between 1985 and 1993.

Ebke's lawyer, Wes Wilson, of Toronto, has asked Justice John Vertes to stay the extradition proceedings.

Vertes adjourned the case in chambers last week. He had been scheduled to rule on the motion July 19.

Wilson argued earlier that the proceedings should be quashed because Ebke has not been formally charged with a crime by German authorities.

Acting on the request of the German government, Ebke was arrested in Yellowknife in May 2000 by RCMP. He operates the Back Bay Bed and Breakfast in Old Town with partner Regina Pfeifer.

Ebke is free on bail.
