Inuvik (Jun 08/01) - About 20 people got to learn about an ancient Chinese practice last Saturday at Aurora College.

Janet Dean of Vancouver taught Fun with Feng Shui.

"The whole idea behind it is that you influence the energy that circulates around you," Dean explained.

She gave an example.

"If you wanted to have a better love relationship with someone, you put in a symbol of what love means to you in that part of your house, and it will enhance love," Dean said.

"The Chinese people sum up feng shui as being around environmental consciousness, that you are conscious and aware of what does what in your home, like what makes you feel good, what makes you feel sad," she said.

"You figure out what your personal number is, and then you paint the room the colour that's good for you."

Dean explained that one's lucky number can be spotted in the magic square. In this table, the numbers add up to 15 in any direction.

In Saturday's class Dean went over feng shui in terms of health, wisdom, family, relationships, friends and fame. She explained that some of the symbols of romance are round objects, the colours pink and red, and flowers.

As well, each student received three Chinese coins, which signifies getting money easily and keeping it.

Feng shui originated in China about 3,000 years ago and today is quite big there and in Hong Kong. Dean said the practice has grown in popularity in North America over the last 20 years, in part because more people have been able to learn about it.

Dean got into feng shui in 1995 when a friend became involved. Dean said she became quite interested after moving the garbage can out of her wealth corner in the office.

"As soon as I moved it, I kept saving money, I kept making more."

Dean conducted research to learn about feng shui, and also consulted a master.
