The play's the thing

Inuvik (Jun 29/01) - It was an hour full of zany jokes and sidesplitting antics last week during the theatre sport competition at Samuel Hearne.

Students in Cheryl Baytaluke's Grade 9 drama class faced off against members of her Grade 10 drama class. They participated in a number of improvisational exercises, in which two people at a time talk to each other by only asking questions.

"It's actually really hard, that is a really hard game," Baytaluke said with a laugh.

The students managed to make all the games seem easy. The Addicts Anonymous skit featured someone obsessed with talking about himself, while another was hooked on television commercials.

During the director portion, a scene suggested by the audience was acted out, and then done again and again, with the director making new suggestions each time. Especially popular was when the director asked them to go back, with the students obligingly backing up while one said his line backwards.

"This group of kids was a lot more interested in doing improv, and they're quite good at it," Baytaluke explained. "They like doing a lot of funny, comedy stuff."

Some music was performed along with the theatre. The Samuel Hearne Chimes group performed, as did the band consisting of Mathew Anderson, Gerald Kisoun, Tim Robertson and Jordan Villeneuve -- with singer Cobus de Klerk.

As well, Courtney Roland and Paul Carriedo performed a duet.
