Yellowknife (Jun 15/01) - The board of Yellowknife Education District No. 1 has a new trustee.

Maureen Miller was sworn in Tuesday night at a regular board meeting.

She replaces Jim White, who left the position vacant when he stepped down in March due to other commitments.

Her appointment brings the board up to a full complement of seven trustees, all volunteers who receive $5,000 a year in honoraria for their services. Miller was selected from among seven applicants who answered the board's advertisements.

Miller is the mother of two boys, Matthew, 6, and Colin, 9, both students in the public school district.

"I've done a lot of volunteer work in the sporting community and I felt I had something I could bring," she said.

Miller, 37, has lived in Yellowknife for 24 years. She has experience on many volunteer boards, including a previous appointment as finance chair of the Sport North Federation.

"She has a wealth of experience in the finance area," emphasized school board chair Dan Schofield.

That financial experience should help as the board continues to manage tight budget constraints.

Miller was a student in the public school district herself, having attended William McDonald school and Sir John Franklin high school. She studied at Aurora College and has been an administrative assistant for Dillon Consulting, an engineering firm, for the past two years. Previously, she worked for the government of the Northwest Territories and the legislature.

Miller is an active competitive curler who has participated in four Canadian championships and is currently a director of the Canadian Curling Association. Her husband Ken is a plumber who works for J&R Mechanical.
