Bank scam warning

Iqaluit (Jun 11/01) - Businesses around Nunavut are right to be concerned about a Nigerian bank scam promising riches, says RCMP Const. Kevin Craig.

Police have received at least 20 complaints, four in the last week, about a suspicious pitch that comes as an e-mail, fax and letter.

Residents and business owners, some as far away as Grise Fiord, have been targeted.

The scheme asks people to supply their bank account numbers, with an offer of money in return. Instead, culprits clean out the bank account.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," Craig said.

"Even our RCMP detachment received the faxed letters. It might be they have not targeted Nunavut in the past so they're coming on pretty strong."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Craig at the Iqaluit detachment.
