Yellowknife (May 25/01) - The Deh Cho Drum has been recognized as one of the top newspapers in its class.

The Drum, a member of the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association, finished third among 19 newspapers with a circulation less than 2,000.

Although not a formal award this year -- it will become one in 2002 -- the judges named The Drum "the most improved newspaper" in its class.

"The top three papers in this class were notable for their strong emphasis on well-written community news," said the judge in his comments.

"They also boasted reasonably good photography and they offered their readers their own comments on their editorial pages."

The Drum scored top marks in news, photography, local features and advertising design.

Because of its third-place finish, the newspaper advances to the Canadian Community Newspaper Association's better newspaper contest.
