Inuvik (May 18/01) - Surpassed in flower sales only by the day for lovers, the day for mothers was marked with bouquets, chocolates, cards and the traditional Mother's Day brunch.
Sunny and warm weather graced the second Sunday of the month, May 13 this year, creating near perfect conditions for celebrating and honouring the hardwork and unconditional love mothers are known for giving.
Appreciation gifts of all kinds marked the day and weekend shoppers clogged the flower store, the card store and gift shops looking for that something special.
Delta Flowers and Crafts owner Rose Ann Snow said that, although Valentine's Day tops the charts in flower sales, Mother's Day comes in a close second.
With an answering machine message asking customers to come to the store "due to the high volume of calls," Snow says she not only opens on Sundays for late-comers, but stays open until the last flower is sold.
"With deliveries and last minute walk-ins, Sunday is as busy as Saturday, if not busier," she said while snipping flower stems for a bouquet arranged in a basket.
"Flowers are the biggest sellers and I always stay open until the last person comes in wanting to get them."
Church services are always a big hit on Mother's Day, too, and Heidi Harry said that all of the kids handed out roses to their moms during the Sunday service she attended with her family.
"We gave our moms roses this morning in church," she said. And I didn't have time to make her breakfast, but I made her lunch."
For the younger children, fathers are often called up on to offer a helping hand in the gift buying process.
Toddlers and preteens and their dads were seen everywhere around town on Saturday, filling the flower store and depleteing the card supply at the drug store.
Megan and Paden Lennie, with the help of their dad, decided on a fragrant bouquet of flowers for their mom.
"We're going to give her flowers," the siblings said while waiting outside the flower store for their dad, who was paying the bill. "The flowers are for our mom on Mother's Day."
