Bridge study due soon

Yellowknife (May 14/01) - An analysis of the long-sought solution to the twice-yearly gap between the North Slave and the south will be complete in June or July, says project manager Andrew Gamble.

"If it were a $50 million project, with current favourable interest rates, costs of carrying that kind of financial package wouldn't be as high as some might think," said Gamble.

The $100,000 study, funded by the federal and territorial governments, includes preliminary engineering and environmental scoping.

Now a consultant, Gamble was a 30-year veteran of the territorial government until retiring after the last election. He was secretary to cabinet in the last assembly.

Gamble said the tri-council - composed of the Fort Providence Dene, Metis and hamlet councils - are looking at financing the bridge through a combination of user fees, the money the territorial government spends each year on ferry and ice bridge operations and equity from the community and other partners.
