Yellowknife (May 11/01) - Local businesses will be occupying the majority of booths at the trade show this weekend, but that doesn't mean there won't be any room for a group of Yellowknife Girl Guides.
The guides will be exhibiting at the event for the first time.
Donna Latremouille, District Commissioner of the Yellowknife Girl Guides, says she hopes their participation at this year's show will have a twofold effect.
"We are participating in the trade show to sell off the remainder of the cookies we still have," says Latremouille. "We are also using the trade show as a PR tool to show the community what guiding has to offer, women and girls."
According to Latremouille, the local guides have more than 200 members, including sparks, brownies, guides, pathfinders, and seniors.
Last spring, the guides conducted a membership drive that netted a 10 per cent increase in registration, but Latremouille says there is always room for more.
"We'll have a draw for a membership," Latremouille explains.
"So if they (trade show-goers) don't have a child they want to register, they can still donate to someone they know."
Girl Guides takes part in a wide variety of local activities, such as tree planting, visiting elders, and even attending international camps in various countries that have girl guide clubs as well.
"Hopefully at the trade show we can increase our membership," says Latremouille.
